Throughout my life I have had a passion for skincare. It is one of the areas I find most fascinating, exciting and is continually evolving. While working at AcuHealth I saw the need for an integrative approach to skincare. I enrolled and graduated with honors at Penrose Academy, here in Scottsdale. I was awarded the opportunity to do an externship at North Valley Plastic Surgery and achieved ITECH certification (recognized internationally). Wanting to incorporate peels into my practice, I have also completed the advanced training through PCA Skin, at Linder Dermatology.
My focus is on utilizing one or more of the facial modalities to treat the surface layers of the epidermis including: European facial, pressure point facial massage, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, enzyme peels, and/or dermaplaning to achieve radiant skin. In keeping with an integrative approach we will incorporate facial acupuncture performed by our licensed acupuncturists in the office.
I think we cannot treat the skin without addressing our nutrition. When our skin is acting out it is often blamed on hormones, but there are many nutritional deficiencies that play a role. There has been a lot of current research that leads to the belief that we are what we eat and from the words of one doctor, “If you want to heal your skin you have to heal your gut.” I have been on a personal journey to change some of the food aggravators in my diet that greatly affected my skin. After eliminating gluten and excess sugar from my diet, I saw a drastic reduction in the amount of “hormonal” breakouts around my jawline and rash outbreaks on my arms. Part of my approach is to attain a good understanding of your nutritional health and how we can incorporate vital nutrients: minerals, vitamins, and essential fats into your diet. I think you will be amazed at how wonderful you will feel inside and out!
We live in a culture of wanting instant results especially with our skin. The deliverance of instant results can come from some pretty aggressive treatments of which I have not been immune to trying myself. Upon considering my first chemical peel I went to a reputable Doctor’s office and didn’t exactly end up with the results I had hoped for. A lesson to myself, always do your due diligence in investigating what you are putting on and in your skin. I knew nothing of chemical peels and the different depths at which they penetrate the layers of the epidermis. With this being said I blindly signed up for the most aggressive peel one can get without prepping my skin for the trauma I was about to cause it. Now this would not have happened to everyone, but I was the lucky or unlucky 5% that would get a bacterial infection, end up at the dermatologist and on antibiotics to clear up the infection. The only reason I think of it as a lucky situation at this moment in time is because it was one of the greatest learning lessons I could have experienced regarding my skin.
I was left with a lot of post inflammatory bumps and hyperpigmentation that needed treatment. It certainly was my good fortune to find an esthetician that was extremely knowledgeable and cautious with the product lines she used. She helped me through the ordeal of healing my skin and the emotional effects it had taken on me. My monthly visits became learning lessons in the art of skin care and the balance of genuinely caring for the client’s concerns. As my skin began to heal and glow I knew I had found the path I wanted to pursue and was deeply passionate about.
I am also deeply passionate about trying to cook healthy, nutritious meals for my family that are gluten free, nourishing traditions based, and paleo friendly (so I am bound to share many recipes with you). I have two quickly growing children Ellis and Violet (whom have both helped to put some wrinkles on my face). To stay balanced I love to do Yoga and hike the various mountain ranges around Arizona, with our pup Willow.
